“Nancy Hanks, Bondwoman,” is one of a collection of plays featured in the book, American Folk Plays, edited by Professor Koch and published in 1939. The drama is a one-act play based on local historical lore and is set in 1808. The story unfolds during an afternoon when Sarah Enloe’s desire for revenge and fear of scandal drives her husband, Abraham Enloe, into making a decision he will regret the rest of his life, and leaving the fate of Nancy Hank’s unborn child to rest in the balance.
Prof Koch, considered to be the “Father of American Folk Drama,” founded and created Carolina Playmakers at UNC Chapel Hill and its on-campus theater in 1919. This theater was the first state subsidized playhouse in the country and still continues producing outstanding theatrical performances under the name PlayMakers Repertory Company. The theatre is not state subsidized and is a professional LORT theatre.
